The Clearing
Residential
Northland, New Zealand
At just x square metres, this retreat is an exercise in restraint—an exploration of how less can become more. Conceived as a modest bush sanctuary, the brief distilled the home to its essential requirements, allowing attention to shift toward what matters most: landscape, light, and shared experience.
The architecture prioritises communal living, with generous gathering spaces forming the heart of the home. Freed from rigid siting constraints, the building was carefully positioned to optimise solar access throughout the year, preserve privacy from neighbouring properties, and establish a subtle relationship with the distant coastline. This elevated outlook is revealed only from the mezzanine level, creating a deliberate moment of discovery within the compact footprint.
Natural ventilation drives the environmental strategy, with every room designed to capture breezes and promote cross-flow ventilation. Compact in size yet generous in experience, the project seeks to demonstrate how thoughtful design can amplify both connection to landscape and a sense of place.
